Viktor Levi is the son of a sardine seller family from Gallipoli. He started to work as a grape wholesaler in Bozcaada, where he went to buy sardines, and then started to make wine. While collecting his receivables from the places where he brought sardines to Istanbul, he encountered a demand for wine. This is how he started wine wholesaling. At this time, there were four wineries operating in Istanbul. These were Pano, Diamandi, Izmirli and Sofaki. These winery owners tried to pay Viktor Levi the money they wanted, saying that we sell the most wine. Viktor Levi, annoyed by this, opens his own winery to teach them a lesson with the inherited wit given by Judaism.
Thus, he actively entered the world of retail. Viktor Levi is surprised by the popularity of his winery, which he initially opened to give lectures, due to the high quality of the wines. He gave up wholesaling sardines and grapes and turned exclusively to wine. Until his death in 1967. After Viktor Levi’s death, the winery was active until his cousin Yasef Levi moved to America in 1985.
After this date, the shop was closed and the owner evicted. The shop later became a coffeehouse, was bought by Fevzi Büyükerol in 1999 and in the same year the decoration works started. The decoration was done in accordance with the materials and style when it was first opened, aiming to capture the original. These works lasted for a year, all sacrifices were mobilized and Viktor Levi Wine House was brought back to life with its new decoration and historical texture to offer the same taste of the wines of that time.
